How to post to Instagram

Newsflash! Not everyone knows how to post to Instagram!

We love working with all shapes and sizes of businesses and recently we’ve been helping some complete social media beginners. People can be embarrassed by a lack of knowledge, but we always reassure that no-one is born knowing everything and that we are here to support every step of the way.

In some ways, working with beginners is most satisfying because we are part of their journey from the start and to see progress makes everyone happy!

This is a short screen-grab video I made recently to help a client who is coming to an Instagram training session soon but wanted to start posting – sharing this visual, as well as a written step by step guide really helped her!

How to post to Instagram

We often get asked the question, should I be using Instagram? The answer isn’t quite as straight forward as ‘yes or no’ as it depends on business type, audience and other factors.

Instagram is a visual driven platform – it’s all about the image, the video and the story you can tell. If you have a business that isn’t visual – for example a law firm or an accountancy, it may be a platform that you struggle with.We are great advocates of making social media as ‘easy as 1, 2, 3’ and where we see clients battling to create content, we’ll always look at whether the platform is right. Time and effort needs to see a ROI – think about this before you decide you must be on every platform.

Users in the age group 18-34 make up around 65% of Instagram’s audience – this should also be a consideration for you. Are you core customers in this age bracket?

Instagram is about being in the moment – we don’t manage any Instagram accounts for clients as we strongly believe content needs to come from within a business. It’s all about sharing what’s happening ‘right now’ and telling a story.

Have you spotted Instagram’s new “Poll” option in stories?

Instagram has recently added the option to set a ‘poll’ in your stories.

This is a great way to encourage interaction from your followers. Here’s a step by step guide of how to set a poll up.

Create a Story Post

Take your photo or create your text and background post for your story. Add any filters, text etc to your story, but leave room to add the poll to your post.

To create a poll, tap on the Sticker icon (the square with the face) at the top of the Story screen and select the Poll sticker option. The option to add your question and a Yes/No poll box will appear. Type in the question you want to ask in the text field.

To customize the poll responses, tap in each box (yes or no) and type in the choices that fit your question. You can provide any text option up to 26 characters for each option in the poll, but you’re limited to two options and we’d recommend keeping it fairly simple.

When you’ve finished customizing your poll, tap on the checkmark or Done button in the top-right corner of the screen.

Make it look good!

The poll sticker will centre on the screen of your story but you can drag it around so it is in prime position and “pinch” it to make it bigger or smaller.

Complete your story post and add it to your stories as you would any other post.

That’s it!

Get your results

You can see a log of your poll results  by opening up your stories and tapping on the viewers listed at the bottom of the story post, or swipe up to open up the post analytics.

Then tap on the eye icon for the post to see the details for each person who viewed your post, as well as who voted for which option in the poll.

The poll results are only available while the story is live so when the story disappears after 24 hours, the analytics won’t appear in your other account analytics.

We recommend you set reminders to log in and grab your poll results before the story expires.

Get creative

So get creative with your questions, think about what insight into your customers will really help your business and have fun!!

Mac users – tip for Instagram

Instagram is first and foremost a smartphone based app but sometimes I’ve wanted to post from my Mac…..well, I discovered a pretty nifty ‘hack’ yesterday…..here goes!

  • Firstly, open Safari and head to Preferences
  • Now click Advanced
  • Next make sure Show Develop Menu in the Menu Bar is on.
  • From there, head to the Instagram website and log in to your account.
  • Then in the menu select Develop > User Agent > Safari – iOS 10 – iPhone.
  • The Instagram website should automatically reload (manually refresh if not) and display the mobile version of the site, complete with upload functionality.
  • Select the Camera icon, browse for the image you’d like to post and select Choose.

A-MA-ZING!!!
