We Are 10!!!

February is an important month for us….we are celebrating 10 years in business! As well as a trip into London with our long suffering (or some might say very lucky) husbands to celebrate, we will be reflecting on the last decade with a few blogs and social media fun throughout February, as well as some little treats and gifts for our networking colleagues and clients.

Ten years is a long time – UK statistics say that only 50% of small businesses survive beyond 5 years in business so we think we’re doing pretty well to still be here. Not just still here but growing and thriving!

We’ve worked with such a massive variety of businesses since 2010 – all manner of industries and a really varied mix in terms of size. One-man bands to nationwide multi-million-pound companies, sometimes we feel we’ve seen it all.

When we set up One to Three our main objective was to build a business around our children (we have four boys between us.) We wanted to ensure we were present for them, but at the same time both had a real love for marketing and wanted to use our previous ‘corporate’ career experience. In 2010 our boys were 6,5,4 and 2 – the maths is pretty easy…they’re now all at secondary school and the eldest will be sitting his GCSE’s later this year! Where has the time gone?

Our celebrations have got us thinking about 2010 and what was hitting the headlines…here’s what our research has found. We hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane.

  • In April 2010 the first iPad was launched (Claire bought her husband this 1st generation iPad…it was really heavy!)
  • Lady Gaga wore the ‘meat Dress’ to the VMAs. Imagine that in 2020 – it simply wouldn’t happen!
  • Facebook had 600 million users (it’s 2.37 billion today) and a film based on it’s creation “The Social Network” premiered in 2010
  • 2010 was a big year for social media – both Instagram and Pinterest were launched
  • The Burj Khalifa – the world’s tallest building officially opened (Claire was lucky enough to go to the very top in 2014)
  • The Icelandic Volcano Eyjafjallajökull erupted causing chaos in Europe’s air space.
  • David Cameron became Prime Minister (we all know how that turned out!)
  • Chelsea won the FA Cup.
  • One Direction was formed as part of the X Factor (were they the same age as our kids?!)
  • 33 Chilean miners survive after 69 days underground – they made headlines around the world
  • Prince William and Catherine Middleton announced their engagement
  • Jacob and Isabella were the most popular baby names (a nod to Twilight…..were you a fan?)

If you’re anything like us you’ll remember many of these events like they were yesterday – but they were a decade ago!

We can remember our first meeting where we discussed names and how our business might work. Ever since that first meeting we can honestly say that, for the most part, work doesn’t feel like work. We have fun, we have an amazing client base, many of whom we now consider friends and we have a brilliant support team who we would be lost without.

The last decade has been amazing and we genuinely hope we are still here in 2030, delivering cost effective marketing solutions to businesses like yours.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

We are nine!!

Nine years ago this month we were out for dinner, chatting about our adventures in freelancing when an idea struck. There may have been some shrieking (!) there was definitely some excitement – we should work together!

Nine years ago!

We keep repeating that because we can’t quite believe it. Nine years ago, our children were 2, 4, 5 and 6 respectively, we didn’t have any dogs between us (now there are 3!) we did have husbands but they had far less grey hair (!) and we embarked on setting up a business, that would allow us to work around our children whilst keeping the old grey matter ticking over!

Nine years ago!

Time has flown but equally we can’t imagine doing anything else. We are eternally grateful to everyone who has supported us along the way and we really hope to be sitting here in another nine years!

We’ll be sharing a few ‘9 tips’ blogs over the month so watch this space.

2018 – it’s been a wonderful year!

Writing our review of the year blog is always one of our highlights, as it gives us the chance to reminisce about the year that’s gone by and to take a minute to congratulate ourselves on another successful year in business and of course to say thank you to those who’ve supported us.

🎅☃️🎅☃️🎅☃️

2018 has been quite a year! Our busiest yet – so we are really looking forward to switching off over Christmas and recharging our batteries ready for 2019.

🎅☃️🎅☃️🎅☃️

We’ve delivered more training than ever!  Over 125 people have attended either group or 1-2-1 workshops on social media and SEO. When we worked out these numbers we were quite taken aback by just how many people have supported our services. Thank you to each and every one of you!

Some of this training was delivered as part of a government funded initiative via Adviza www.adviza.org.uk  which has been an amazing chance for businesses that might not be able to afford training to get a £150 voucher. It’s been such a pleasure to work with these companies and we’re really grateful to Adviza for making us one of their preferred suppliers. The scheme is running until March 2019 and is open to any business based in Buckinghamshire. If you’d like to know more just email claire@onetothree.co.uk

Something else new for 2018 was our video marketing workshops. Lisa alongside Ann Marie Mayling delivered fantastic group workshops that discussed everything from creating videos to equipment using them on social media and optimising on YouTube.  One attendee travelled all the way from Devon to attend, a 400+ miles round trip!! We plan on doing more with video in 2019 so watch this space.

We’ve also worked with more corporate clients than ever this year.  Claire has interviewed senior-level employees to write their LinkedIn profiles and we’ve both delivered corporate training at various client sites across the South East.

We’ve had over 10,000 visitors to our website this year – for ‘little old us’ this is amazing and it just show Lisa practices what she preaches because 82% of that traffic came from organic Google search!

🎅☃️🎅☃️🎅☃️

We make sure that we meet up regularly and our monthly ‘board walks’ where we walk and talk near the river in Marlow or in Bracknell Forest is a really creative way for us to discuss ideas and review our offerings. The dogs love it too and we find we’re far more productive than if we were meeting in a ‘formal’ indoor setting.

We did our bit for charity this year too! As a team we did the Battersea muddy dog challenge which we absolutely loved! It was a hot summer morning and by the end we were caked in mud and aching from laughing – what’s not to love? We were proud to raise money for the brilliant charity that is also a partner to one of our biggest and longest standing clients, Vets4Pets. We will definitely be doing it again in 2019!

Claire also took part in her first Moonwalk and along with her team raised over £1,000 for breast cancer research. It was a tough challenge, walking from midnight for 5 hours around London, in a bra!!! Definitely something Claire won’t ever forget ……she might just do it again in 2019!!

🎅☃️🎅☃️🎅☃️

Once again, we need to thank our amazing support team – Helen, Jill, Max and Millie. We genuinely couldn’t make our business work without you! Helen is based overseas but we are saying a big thank you to Jill, Max and Millie with lunch at the Ivy Garden in Marlow next week! We also enjoyed a lovely lunch in the summer by the river.

Huge thanks also to our loyal clients, many of whom we’ve supported for years and a few who have been with us from the very beginning – we love the variety of the training we do but having our regulars who trust us to take the reins of their marketing just as wonderful – thank you! We’re eternally grateful for the positive feedback we continue to receive and we honestly work with the nicest people.

🎅☃️🎅☃️🎅☃️

We are told time and time again that we offer excellent value for money to our clients and we are really proud that people say that about us – marketing needn’t cost the earth and to be able to support smaller businesses who don’t have a fortune to spend is one of the most satisfying parts of our work.

🎅☃️🎅☃️🎅☃️

With this in mind it got me thinking about this years’ John Lewis Christmas ad. These TV ads are always highly anticipated and this year the star is the wonderful Elton John ….. it’s a great ad and I’m not going to pretend it didn’t move me….but, so it should with millions of pounds spent on making it and buying the advertising slots!

🎅☃️🎅☃️🎅☃️

However recently I came across a little indie Christmas film which cost less than £50 to make. Phil Beastall, who in his own word is a “frustrated film maker” made his film in 2014 and it is quite simply one of the most impactful videos I’ve ever seen.  It’s an amazing example of how you can make an impact without spending a fortune.

This is a message we give to our clients all of the time!

🎅☃️🎅☃️🎅☃️

So, grab a cuppa and a mince pie…and some tissues as we sign off with this beautiful independent Christmas film. Merry Christmas xx

Proud Sponsors of the Downley Dynamos U14s

We are very proud to be sponsoring the Downley Dynamos Under 14s team this year.

Claire’s son plays for this team and after growth spurts all round they needed a new kit. We were only to happy to fund this – don’t they look smart?

They are a lovely bunch of lads who enjoy their football and have an enviable team spirit! When they win they are gracious and when they lose they learn from the experience. The management received a letter of praise from their opponents in the cup final last year stating they were extremely professional!

Good luck for the season boys….don’t get the kits too muddy ⚽️😀

WE DID IT!!!

What were you up to yesterday morning? We had a slightly ‘different’ Sunday to usual, as we were thigh deep in mud! No, not at the spa but at the Muddy Dog Challenge!

Raising money for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home we took on the challenge with our dogs Milly and Fergus! It was so much fun and the cooling water and mud obstacles were most welcome in the heat! We have to say that Battersea did a marvellous job of keeping us all cool and animal welfare was their priority!

We are really proud to say we’ve raised over £300 for Battersea whilst having the MOST amount of fun! Thank you to everyone who supported us and we will definitely be back next year!!!

Here’s a few pictures at the start, getting very muddy and finishing together!

8 things we’ve learned after 8 years in business!

We are celebrating our 8th anniversary this month! We say this every year but we really don’t know where the time has gone – we guess the saying is true, ‘time flies when you’re having fun.’

It wasn’t long ago, in our end of the year review that we thanked everyone for their support so we won’t repeat ourselves other than to say THANK YOU to everyone who’s worked with us, for us and supported us over the years; we couldn’t have done it without you.

We always celebrate our anniversary with our husbands and this year we enjoyed the Escape Rooms in Reading. What a brilliant fun hour – it’s all about team work, problem solving and being methodical! We won’t give away too much in case you want to give it a try but suffice to say the Vampire Slaying escape had a few jump and scream moments. We were so pleased to succeed (apparently only around 30% of participants do!) and toasted our success over dinner afterwards!

One to Three Marketing

We’ve thought about what to write to mark our 8th year in business and decided ‘8 things we’ve learned along the way’ would be fun. So….here goes!!

All the gear and no idea – never again!

The memory of our first ever prospective client meeting makes us chuckle! We arrived in Windsor, heels and lippy on, PowerPoint presentation at the ready on a HUGE lap top (we weren’t quite earning enough for swish Macbooks then!), business cards, handouts – you name it. Thinking back to this meeting we’ve said to each other we can’t even really remember what the prospect was after! We bombarded him with our scripted PowerPoint,  told him everything we’d ever done in the field of marketing and came away with ….well….nothing!

No experience is wasted though and never again did we turn up to a meeting with ‘all the gear and no idea.’ We now pride ourselves on being ‘just us’ and for taking the time to ask the right questions of a prospective client and prepare, prepare, prepare!

A silent high five walking back to the car park

We’ve done this a few times over the years but one of the first was when we bagged a big contract with one of our now biggest clients. “Little old us” had survived this company merging to become a big deal! We had a new team to report into and the feedback from our previous contacts and us ‘walking the talk’ at our introduction meeting sealed the deal. This was one of the moments when we shrugged off any nagging doubt about running our own show – we’d done it! I’ll always remember that high-five.

Just say no!

Those of you of a certain age will be singing this tune from “Grange Hill.” Well, it took us a good few years to ‘just say no’ but a massive lesson learnt is that it’s ok to not take work on. Sometimes the timing isn’t right, the project is too big or too small, the area of expertise doesn’t quite fit or there might be a client clash. No isn’t a bad word. Infact it’s a great word because used in the right place at the right time saying no is extremely empowering.

Look where you’re walking (this is a silly one!)

I just had to include this as it still has me giggling every time I think about it. Lisa had been invited to run a SEO workshop for the new team of an old client of ours and as she arrived in Marlow she was so pleased to see Tim after a couple of years that her well-rehearsed professional hug turned into more of a ‘swoon’ as she artfully stumbled down the steps that she hadn’t seen! Thank goodness Tim knows Lisa well and caught her before she totally fell over!!

The SEO session went off without a hitch of course but I’ll always remember Lisa phoning me on her way home, hooting with laughter!

Pushing out of your comfort zone is a good thing

When we look back at how far we’ve come since 2010 we’ve got reason to pat ourselves on the back and one of the most successful journeys we’ve been on is to become sought after social media and SEO trainers.

We put the work in, of course, but we’ve developed ourselves into professional trainers who regular run group and 1-2-1 workshops with businesses in and around Bucks and Berks. Lisa ran a UK wide webinar last year which was a huge step forward in our offering and we’ve really thrived on the positive feedback.

We still get that flutter of nerves and adrenaline before we run a course but that’s a good thing and we will continue to learn ourselves so our training becomes better and better.

Networking

Joining a networking group is the single best decision we made for our business. It’s brought countless clients our way, amazing contacts who we now outsource to, training, support and friendship.

When we began networking back in 2010 we joined WIBN in Maidenhead and we joined together! It took us back to our A-level English class where we’d sit together, petrified that Mrs Jones would ask us a question about Chaucer! Lisa even had a mood ring that turned black during that lesson!

It wasn’t long before we were brave enough to network separately, spreading our net. After all there were no scary Mrs Jones’ at WIBN, only lovely friendly ladies – many of whom we still network with today.

Flexible working wins!

The whole point of setting up One to Three Marketing was so that we could work flexibly around our families and without a doubt we’ve achieved that. We love that we are able to do the school drop offs, watch sports fixtures and plays and still get to do the job we love. Some days we might not be at our desks much at all, but the world doesn’t stop spinning and we can work that evening.

We now have extra virtual members of our team who do regular work for us and two of them,  Maxine and Millie both have young families and as long as the work gets done we don’t mind if they work at 2 in the afternoon or 2 in the morning! We are huge advocates for flexible working and hope to see more businesses embrace it in the future.

Proving that mixing business and friendship can and does work

There were a few cynics when we joined forces in 2010. Would our friendship crash and burn? Was business worth testing our friendship? Well, to those cynics….look at us now!! We’re not saying it would work for everyone but we are lucky to share a very similar outlook on business and life and it’s fair to say never in these 8 years have we shared a cross word. We totally have each other’s backs, are 100% honest with each other and wouldn’t want to be in partnership with anyone else.

Of course we’ve learned loads more over the years but these things really stand out to us – here’s to the next 8 years!!!

Our review of 2017 – what a year it’s been!

It really does feel like 5 minutes ago that I was writing a review of 2016 and now, here we are, almost at the end of 2017 and it’s really lovely to reflect on the year and note down some of our achievements, best moments and what we’re looking forward to in 2018.

This is actually a really lovely exercise to do for your personal life as well. We do this as a family, looking back over photos and remembering adventures we had right at the beginning of the year. We always say ‘wow, didn’t we do a lot’ and I think this is really important as we are all so busy that sometimes we forget about the fun of day-to-day life! 😉

We are lucky enough to have very blurred lines between our business relationship and our friendship  – we are best mates that do business together! How cool is that? So, we have had a few personal highlights together that we’ll share in our review of the year too.

But first, business!

At the beginning of the year a regular client of ours, Oxford Vehicle Leasing, asked Claire to work in their offices once a week. This is quite unusual for us, we usually work remotely and have monthly meetings face-to-face but Claire saw this as a good opportunity to really get to know the business. Every Tuesday for this year, Claire has driven through the countryside to Brightwell Baldwin and works on various marketing tasks for the client. From web content to social media strategy and acting as a central marketing contact for other agencies, Claire’s weekly visits have really paid off all round with her being thought of as part of the team (she’s even off on their Christmas ‘do’) and a really deep knowledge of the business being gained.

Lisa has also developed a slightly different way of working this year, mentoring a wide range of clients and having monthly meetings with them to discuss marketing progress and objectives for the weeks ahead. This has proven to be a really popular way of working for owner managed businesses as it allows them to do the day-to-day marketing work but with Lisa to be accountable and to drive their progress, results have been impressive. From local photographers to vending machine specialists, all of these clients have seen a large increase in enquiries and bookings from Google.  HR specialists, bookkeepers, business coaches, interior designers, accountants, property developers and osteopaths and have all seen an improvement in their online profiles and we’ve just signed up to work with a fitness instructor to work in this way from 2018.

We are currently working with over 20 clients on a regular basis! One of our main achievements is to end another year with over ten clients who we have been working with for three years or more and three of these we’ve been with for almost our entire eight years in business! When we sat back and thought about this it really hit home that we’ve created some solid, long lasting relationships with our clients and we are proud to be such an integral part of the teams of Vets4Pets, Teva, OVL Ltd, Q1Care Ltd, Sylvia Baldock Ltd, A B Walker and Sons, Hourbike, Sellwood Wealth Management, Companion Care Vets Basingstoke and Lavender and Stone Beauty Rooms.

A huge thank you to these clients for their continued loyalty.

We love our one-off training sessions too – we’ve run more 1-2-1 and group sessions in 2017 than ever before. From Facebook to Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook ads, Instagram, SEO and general marketing brainstorms, we love to deliver training and will continue to focus on this as an offering in 2018.

We run the training from our respective home offices – this has proven to be really popular, one group who came to us from The Circle Gallery in Sunninghill said of the home based training, “Thanks for hosting in your gorgeous home. We all agree so much nicer than a bland training room!” Lisa even had to extend her dining table in November to accommodate her biggest group ever! Every month our group workshops are fully booked, often with a small waitlist and we are now taking bookings into February 2018!

We were approached in November by http://adviza.org.uk to be a preferred training supplier for social media. The project aims to raise awareness about the importance of workforce development for SMEs across Buckinghamshire AND to ascertain training needs before brokering the most appropriate provision.  Funding received by the European Social Fund and Skills Funding Agency enables this project to happen. Qualifying businesses get a £150 voucher to spend on training with a preferred supplier.   We have already run one session on Facebook marketing and have two more bookings in December. If you think you might qualify for a training voucher, email emmawaters@adviza.org.uk

We love being able to get involved in projects like this and it’s thanks to our names being well known in the local area that this has happened! Networking has been integral to our success and Lisa is still an active member of the WIBN, who offer an amazing support network and recommend our services time and again.

We genuinely LOVE our work. We often say how lucky we are to work for the nicest people and that we get to work together too – what a bonus! We couldn’t do what we do without our amazing support team – Millie Rust Clarke, Maxine Ashman and Helen Cook – who work with us on client support and provide some holiday cover so we can rest up when we are away – THANK YOU ladies.

We treated Millie and Maxine (Helen lives overseas now so couldn’t come) to a gorgeous lunch at the Ivy Garden in Marlow – our first ‘team’ Christmas do! It was lovely.

We’re not shy about shouting about our friendship – in fact one of our clients recently christened us the Ant and Dec of the marketing world! Which we love!!

We’ve had lots of fun together outside of work this year. From “Going Ape” with our families and woodland dog walks (Lisa’s dog Milly even came to stay with me for 2 weeks in the summer!) to going glam for Royal Ascot and having the best evening at the Crystal Maze. We also had a wonderful ‘away day’ at Nirvana Spa, a chance to relax of course but as we swam lengths in the outdoor pool in the sunshine we made a business decision that has proven to be really successful. It’s going to become an annual treat and this way of making business decisions surely can’t be beaten?

We are big advocates of flexible working and are proof that a business can be a success even if it is not run exclusively 9-5. We both work around our families – even though our children are older now (we have 4 boys between us ranging from 14 to 10) we still love the fact that we are at home working when they get home and we support working parents everywhere and actually think having a family gives you a ‘super efficiency’ power!!

We’d also like to give our lovely husbands a shout-out who are always there for us and fully supportive of what we do (and don’t mind if we are tucked away in our offices some evenings, working hard)!  We’re looking forward to our annual One To Three event with our husbands and we’re off to the Escape Rooms in Reading in January!

All in all it really has been a fantastic year!

Our aim for 2018 – to keep going as we are! We deliver a brilliant service to our clients, we enjoy what we do, we get to work together and this is flexible working at its best.

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, to everyone who has supported us.

Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year!

We are celebrating our 7th year in business this February! Yay us!

We always take time out to celebrate our successes at this time of year – not only have we grown our business year on year, we’ve stayed the best of friends! That’s definitely worth raising a glass of bubbles to and we did that over a gorgeous Thai meal this weekend! Our long suffering (or should we say very lucky) husbands joined us of course and a great night was had.

We thought it would be fun to share seven facts you might not know about us……..

  1. Lisa was a great ice skater as a child, competing and taking part in shows! She occasionally hits the ice with her kids now a days too but after attempting a rather fast spin last year that ended up in a few bruises, she might stick to dry land!
  2. Claire is scared of bridges! Yes a bit random but she doesn’t like walking over them and if she can take a route where she doesn’t have to drive over a bridge….then she will!
  3. Lisa is a keen runner. Pounding the pavements 3 times a week Lisa is a fitness fiend who can run 3 or 4 miles with ease and chats the whole time!
  4. Claire used to love horse riding. Pretty good back in the day, Claire competed in local cross-country competitions but a nasty fall age 13 saw her hang up her riding boots. However, a beach ride in Devon was ticked off her bucket list a few years ago & she’d love to be back in the saddle one day!
  5. Both Claire and Lisa met their husbands at the tender age of 17! Good going ladies (and gents!)
  6. Lisa and Claire have got 4 sons and 3 dogs between them (another nice round 7!) – and they’re all great friends.
  7. Lisa and Claire LOVE everything about One to Three marketing…ok you probably did know that fact but it’s worth repeating. Combining work and friendship is definitely one of the greatest achievements of this dynamic duo!

Thanks to everyone who’s shared the last 7 years with us – we can’t wait for the next 7!

Claire and Lisa xx

Starting the year with a BANG – award winning social media no less!

WOW! We’re starting the new year off with a bang as we’ve just found out that we have helped one of our clients, Lavender and Stone Beauty Rooms to win a major social media competition!

We’re feeling pretty awesome to say the least!

Beauty giant Decleor invited all of their salons and spas across the UK to participate and we are over the moon that Lavender and Stone have won!

We used a mix of social media strategies and platforms, including paid for ads and organic posts across Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn. We aimed for beautiful visuals, engaging copy and regular posts.

We had to submit a 1-pager to summarise how far our campaign reached….

Here’s the winning entry!
