An update on the way we are working

We would like to provide an update in the way we are working in light of the recent Government announcements and the lifting of restrictions.

We moved all consultancy work and training online when lockdown commenced in March 2020. We have adapted as the months rolled on and have learnt so much about the best way to work ‘virtually’ – feedback from our clients has been incredibly positive.

Many clients have told us they enjoy working online, that it saves them time and costs in travelling and feels more efficient as they can action our suggestions as soon as the meeting finishes. We’ve also begun working with a number of clients much further afield and in some cases even overseas!

We also find it to be an efficient way to work so our intention is to continue delivering consultancy and training via Zoom. There will be the odd exception, of course, and we will always be as flexible and accommodating as possible. All sessions over the Summer will remain virtual and we will review the situation again in September.

Take care everyone and thank you for your support.

Happy Birthday to us – 11 years in business

One to Three turns 11 years old this month! Last year we celebrated our anniversary with a lovely lunch out in London and a trip to the theatre. Whilst we are really sad we can’t get together in person this year we will be celebrating with a glass of fizz on Zoom (something we’ve done throughout the pandemic to keep in touch – here we are just last Friday!)

We thought we’d have a bit of fun and share 11 facts about us that you might not know. Enjoy!

1. Lisa used to enjoy performing as a child (and dressing up!) and could be found ice-skating in shows at her local rink, performing on stage or entering disco-dancing competitions!

2. Lisa took Spanish and French A-Level and can still hold a good conversation in Spanish to this day.  She’s remained in touch with her Spanish pen-pal Miguel and used to stay with his family, taking part in Las Fallas in Valencia and even being invited to his sister’s wedding! They still exchange Christmas cards every year signed from “Your Spanish Family”.

3. Lisa’s main hobbies are running and tennis and occasionally she takes to the courts with her husband (they’ve even won a couple of trophies together).

4. Lisa is a qualified scuba diver, and holidays before the kids were always booked around diving sites.  Imagine her excitement, when her boys learned to scuba dive 2 years ago in Mexico and they were lucky enough to see a sea horse, and even follow a sea turtle along the reef!

5. Claire LOVED horse riding as a child and teen and entered many show jumping and cross country competitions on borrowed ponies, especially her favourite Jamie. Her dream is to take up riding again one day and perhaps even own her own horse.6. Claire’s first job was when she was 14 in the kitchen of a nursing home. She used to help prepare Sunday lunch and would sit with some of the most lonely residents whilst they enjoyed their meal. To this day Claire loves a good chat!

7. Claire is married to her childhood sweetheart – they began dating at the age of 17 and used to meet up at the bus stop outside school!

8. One of Claire’s dreams is to own a camper van and explore the UK  with her husband – once the kids are old enough to be left home alone this dream will become a reality!

9. Claire and Lisa first holidayed together at the tender age of 17 and 18 respectively. Two weeks in Tenerife were one big party – our kids are now nearing this age which is slightly terrifying!

10. We’ve since holidayed together a number of times – Lisa’s hen-do in Dublin, a weekend break in Edinburgh and Lisa’s 40th birthday in Barcelona.

Our most recent trip was in 2019 when we took the husbands, kids and dogs for a family break to Dorset.

11. Claire and Lisa are both dog lovers. Claire has a black lab Sookie who is 10 and a golden retriever Fergus who is 7. Lisa has a black lab called Milly who is 4 and Claire actually helped Lisa to find her when she started looking for a puppy! We adore our dogs!!

Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the last 11 years – especially the last 12 months which have been our most challenging! We really can’t wait to see what the next 11 years bring.

Checking in!

What a whirlwind the last few months have been! We’ve been a bit quiet on our blog so thought we’d just jump on to say hi and let you know what we’ve been up to.

Zooming!

Like many businesses we’ve become best mates with Zoom! Thanks to this awesome tech we’ve been able to keep in touch with our clients and have delivered consultancy sessions, 1-2-1 training and group workshops from the comfort of our home offices (or kitchen table when husband or kids gets dibs on the office!) Just today we ran a Google My Business Zoom workshop which was great and next week we have a group Facebook workshop in the diary.

We’ve decided to stay virtual for the remainder of 2020 and rethink in early 2021 – the safety of our clients, us and our families is paramount, we know you’ll agree, and because running everything online works so well we feel there’s no need to change things.

In fact Zooming has given us a chance to work with new clients we may not have done in ‘normal life.’  Clients who are based further afield such as TAOES in London and Scotland, more members of the EWM team (Southampton & Bournemouth) and even an International training session on LinkedIn for BioPharmaSpec would not have been on our radar if it weren’t for virtual working. Just this week we found ourselves on a 1-2-1 call with a coaching company in Singapore!

We do like to try and see the silver lining!

Meeting up

Those who know us well will recall our ‘board walks’ where we meet up with our dogs and walk in beautiful woodland and discuss our business. We couldn’t do these for a while but as soon as restrictions were lifted we met for a socially distanced walk – the first one was very wet, the second a gorgeously hot day! We felt lucky to be able to see each other, even if we couldn’t have a hug!

We’ve also taken part in the obligatory Zoom quiz nights and even did a family virtual escape room, virtual Ascot races and learned the Lindy Hop together on VE Day!

Staying Positive

It’s not been the easiest time but we do try really hard to stay positive and the support and kindness from our clients and colleagues has been truly wonderful. We are so grateful to work with such an awesome bunch and this is a chance to say thank you!

Like so many businesses, some of our clients have been negatively impacted over the last 6 months. We work across the hospitality sector, the beauty sector and other industries that simply haven’t been able to work during periods of lockdown.  Our hearts go out to everybody who has been impacted and we’ve tried our best to remain helpful and be there for our clients as much as possible.

We’ve also kept in touch with our amazing support team.  We usually meet the team for a summer lunch by the river, but this year we had lunch online from our very sunny gardens!  We’ve been determined to keep as sociable as possible despite the limitations!

What’s next?

As we move into Autumn we will continue to work hard for our clients, take each day at a time and continue to share a bit of fun on our social media channels when we can!

We’re really hoping the Panto (this will be our 10th year going together with our families) happens at Christmas (oh yes we are!) but if not, you’ve guessed it, we’ll do something virtually!

How have you been getting on over the last few months? We’d love to know!

Claire & Lisa

We Are 10!!!

February is an important month for us….we are celebrating 10 years in business! As well as a trip into London with our long suffering (or some might say very lucky) husbands to celebrate, we will be reflecting on the last decade with a few blogs and social media fun throughout February, as well as some little treats and gifts for our networking colleagues and clients.

Ten years is a long time – UK statistics say that only 50% of small businesses survive beyond 5 years in business so we think we’re doing pretty well to still be here. Not just still here but growing and thriving!

We’ve worked with such a massive variety of businesses since 2010 – all manner of industries and a really varied mix in terms of size. One-man bands to nationwide multi-million-pound companies, sometimes we feel we’ve seen it all.

When we set up One to Three our main objective was to build a business around our children (we have four boys between us.) We wanted to ensure we were present for them, but at the same time both had a real love for marketing and wanted to use our previous ‘corporate’ career experience. In 2010 our boys were 6,5,4 and 2 – the maths is pretty easy…they’re now all at secondary school and the eldest will be sitting his GCSE’s later this year! Where has the time gone?

Our celebrations have got us thinking about 2010 and what was hitting the headlines…here’s what our research has found. We hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane.

  • In April 2010 the first iPad was launched (Claire bought her husband this 1st generation iPad…it was really heavy!)
  • Lady Gaga wore the ‘meat Dress’ to the VMAs. Imagine that in 2020 – it simply wouldn’t happen!
  • Facebook had 600 million users (it’s 2.37 billion today) and a film based on it’s creation “The Social Network” premiered in 2010
  • 2010 was a big year for social media – both Instagram and Pinterest were launched
  • The Burj Khalifa – the world’s tallest building officially opened (Claire was lucky enough to go to the very top in 2014)
  • The Icelandic Volcano Eyjafjallajökull erupted causing chaos in Europe’s air space.
  • David Cameron became Prime Minister (we all know how that turned out!)
  • Chelsea won the FA Cup.
  • One Direction was formed as part of the X Factor (were they the same age as our kids?!)
  • 33 Chilean miners survive after 69 days underground – they made headlines around the world
  • Prince William and Catherine Middleton announced their engagement
  • Jacob and Isabella were the most popular baby names (a nod to Twilight…..were you a fan?)

If you’re anything like us you’ll remember many of these events like they were yesterday – but they were a decade ago!

We can remember our first meeting where we discussed names and how our business might work. Ever since that first meeting we can honestly say that, for the most part, work doesn’t feel like work. We have fun, we have an amazing client base, many of whom we now consider friends and we have a brilliant support team who we would be lost without.

The last decade has been amazing and we genuinely hope we are still here in 2030, delivering cost effective marketing solutions to businesses like yours.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

We are nine!!

Nine years ago this month we were out for dinner, chatting about our adventures in freelancing when an idea struck. There may have been some shrieking (!) there was definitely some excitement – we should work together!

Nine years ago!

We keep repeating that because we can’t quite believe it. Nine years ago, our children were 2, 4, 5 and 6 respectively, we didn’t have any dogs between us (now there are 3!) we did have husbands but they had far less grey hair (!) and we embarked on setting up a business, that would allow us to work around our children whilst keeping the old grey matter ticking over!

Nine years ago!

Time has flown but equally we can’t imagine doing anything else. We are eternally grateful to everyone who has supported us along the way and we really hope to be sitting here in another nine years!

We’ll be sharing a few ‘9 tips’ blogs over the month so watch this space.

2018 – it’s been a wonderful year!

Writing our review of the year blog is always one of our highlights, as it gives us the chance to reminisce about the year that’s gone by and to take a minute to congratulate ourselves on another successful year in business and of course to say thank you to those who’ve supported us.

🎅☃️🎅☃️🎅☃️

2018 has been quite a year! Our busiest yet – so we are really looking forward to switching off over Christmas and recharging our batteries ready for 2019.

🎅☃️🎅☃️🎅☃️

We’ve delivered more training than ever!  Over 125 people have attended either group or 1-2-1 workshops on social media and SEO. When we worked out these numbers we were quite taken aback by just how many people have supported our services. Thank you to each and every one of you!

Some of this training was delivered as part of a government funded initiative via Adviza www.adviza.org.uk  which has been an amazing chance for businesses that might not be able to afford training to get a £150 voucher. It’s been such a pleasure to work with these companies and we’re really grateful to Adviza for making us one of their preferred suppliers. The scheme is running until March 2019 and is open to any business based in Buckinghamshire. If you’d like to know more just email claire@onetothree.co.uk

Something else new for 2018 was our video marketing workshops. Lisa alongside Ann Marie Mayling delivered fantastic group workshops that discussed everything from creating videos to equipment using them on social media and optimising on YouTube.  One attendee travelled all the way from Devon to attend, a 400+ miles round trip!! We plan on doing more with video in 2019 so watch this space.

We’ve also worked with more corporate clients than ever this year.  Claire has interviewed senior-level employees to write their LinkedIn profiles and we’ve both delivered corporate training at various client sites across the South East.

We’ve had over 10,000 visitors to our website this year – for ‘little old us’ this is amazing and it just show Lisa practices what she preaches because 82% of that traffic came from organic Google search!

🎅☃️🎅☃️🎅☃️

We make sure that we meet up regularly and our monthly ‘board walks’ where we walk and talk near the river in Marlow or in Bracknell Forest is a really creative way for us to discuss ideas and review our offerings. The dogs love it too and we find we’re far more productive than if we were meeting in a ‘formal’ indoor setting.

We did our bit for charity this year too! As a team we did the Battersea muddy dog challenge which we absolutely loved! It was a hot summer morning and by the end we were caked in mud and aching from laughing – what’s not to love? We were proud to raise money for the brilliant charity that is also a partner to one of our biggest and longest standing clients, Vets4Pets. We will definitely be doing it again in 2019!

Claire also took part in her first Moonwalk and along with her team raised over £1,000 for breast cancer research. It was a tough challenge, walking from midnight for 5 hours around London, in a bra!!! Definitely something Claire won’t ever forget ……she might just do it again in 2019!!

🎅☃️🎅☃️🎅☃️

Once again, we need to thank our amazing support team – Helen, Jill, Max and Millie. We genuinely couldn’t make our business work without you! Helen is based overseas but we are saying a big thank you to Jill, Max and Millie with lunch at the Ivy Garden in Marlow next week! We also enjoyed a lovely lunch in the summer by the river.

Huge thanks also to our loyal clients, many of whom we’ve supported for years and a few who have been with us from the very beginning – we love the variety of the training we do but having our regulars who trust us to take the reins of their marketing just as wonderful – thank you! We’re eternally grateful for the positive feedback we continue to receive and we honestly work with the nicest people.

🎅☃️🎅☃️🎅☃️

We are told time and time again that we offer excellent value for money to our clients and we are really proud that people say that about us – marketing needn’t cost the earth and to be able to support smaller businesses who don’t have a fortune to spend is one of the most satisfying parts of our work.

🎅☃️🎅☃️🎅☃️

With this in mind it got me thinking about this years’ John Lewis Christmas ad. These TV ads are always highly anticipated and this year the star is the wonderful Elton John ….. it’s a great ad and I’m not going to pretend it didn’t move me….but, so it should with millions of pounds spent on making it and buying the advertising slots!

🎅☃️🎅☃️🎅☃️

However recently I came across a little indie Christmas film which cost less than £50 to make. Phil Beastall, who in his own word is a “frustrated film maker” made his film in 2014 and it is quite simply one of the most impactful videos I’ve ever seen.  It’s an amazing example of how you can make an impact without spending a fortune.

This is a message we give to our clients all of the time!

🎅☃️🎅☃️🎅☃️

So, grab a cuppa and a mince pie…and some tissues as we sign off with this beautiful independent Christmas film. Merry Christmas xx

Proud Sponsors of the Downley Dynamos U14s

We are very proud to be sponsoring the Downley Dynamos Under 14s team this year.

Claire’s son plays for this team and after growth spurts all round they needed a new kit. We were only to happy to fund this – don’t they look smart?

They are a lovely bunch of lads who enjoy their football and have an enviable team spirit! When they win they are gracious and when they lose they learn from the experience. The management received a letter of praise from their opponents in the cup final last year stating they were extremely professional!

Good luck for the season boys….don’t get the kits too muddy ⚽️😀

WE DID IT!!!

What were you up to yesterday morning? We had a slightly ‘different’ Sunday to usual, as we were thigh deep in mud! No, not at the spa but at the Muddy Dog Challenge!

Raising money for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home we took on the challenge with our dogs Milly and Fergus! It was so much fun and the cooling water and mud obstacles were most welcome in the heat! We have to say that Battersea did a marvellous job of keeping us all cool and animal welfare was their priority!

We are really proud to say we’ve raised over £300 for Battersea whilst having the MOST amount of fun! Thank you to everyone who supported us and we will definitely be back next year!!!

Here’s a few pictures at the start, getting very muddy and finishing together!

8 things we’ve learned after 8 years in business!

We are celebrating our 8th anniversary this month! We say this every year but we really don’t know where the time has gone – we guess the saying is true, ‘time flies when you’re having fun.’

It wasn’t long ago, in our end of the year review that we thanked everyone for their support so we won’t repeat ourselves other than to say THANK YOU to everyone who’s worked with us, for us and supported us over the years; we couldn’t have done it without you.

We always celebrate our anniversary with our husbands and this year we enjoyed the Escape Rooms in Reading. What a brilliant fun hour – it’s all about team work, problem solving and being methodical! We won’t give away too much in case you want to give it a try but suffice to say the Vampire Slaying escape had a few jump and scream moments. We were so pleased to succeed (apparently only around 30% of participants do!) and toasted our success over dinner afterwards!

One to Three Marketing

We’ve thought about what to write to mark our 8th year in business and decided ‘8 things we’ve learned along the way’ would be fun. So….here goes!!

All the gear and no idea – never again!

The memory of our first ever prospective client meeting makes us chuckle! We arrived in Windsor, heels and lippy on, PowerPoint presentation at the ready on a HUGE lap top (we weren’t quite earning enough for swish Macbooks then!), business cards, handouts – you name it. Thinking back to this meeting we’ve said to each other we can’t even really remember what the prospect was after! We bombarded him with our scripted PowerPoint,  told him everything we’d ever done in the field of marketing and came away with ….well….nothing!

No experience is wasted though and never again did we turn up to a meeting with ‘all the gear and no idea.’ We now pride ourselves on being ‘just us’ and for taking the time to ask the right questions of a prospective client and prepare, prepare, prepare!

A silent high five walking back to the car park

We’ve done this a few times over the years but one of the first was when we bagged a big contract with one of our now biggest clients. “Little old us” had survived this company merging to become a big deal! We had a new team to report into and the feedback from our previous contacts and us ‘walking the talk’ at our introduction meeting sealed the deal. This was one of the moments when we shrugged off any nagging doubt about running our own show – we’d done it! I’ll always remember that high-five.

Just say no!

Those of you of a certain age will be singing this tune from “Grange Hill.” Well, it took us a good few years to ‘just say no’ but a massive lesson learnt is that it’s ok to not take work on. Sometimes the timing isn’t right, the project is too big or too small, the area of expertise doesn’t quite fit or there might be a client clash. No isn’t a bad word. Infact it’s a great word because used in the right place at the right time saying no is extremely empowering.

Look where you’re walking (this is a silly one!)

I just had to include this as it still has me giggling every time I think about it. Lisa had been invited to run a SEO workshop for the new team of an old client of ours and as she arrived in Marlow she was so pleased to see Tim after a couple of years that her well-rehearsed professional hug turned into more of a ‘swoon’ as she artfully stumbled down the steps that she hadn’t seen! Thank goodness Tim knows Lisa well and caught her before she totally fell over!!

The SEO session went off without a hitch of course but I’ll always remember Lisa phoning me on her way home, hooting with laughter!

Pushing out of your comfort zone is a good thing

When we look back at how far we’ve come since 2010 we’ve got reason to pat ourselves on the back and one of the most successful journeys we’ve been on is to become sought after social media and SEO trainers.

We put the work in, of course, but we’ve developed ourselves into professional trainers who regular run group and 1-2-1 workshops with businesses in and around Bucks and Berks. Lisa ran a UK wide webinar last year which was a huge step forward in our offering and we’ve really thrived on the positive feedback.

We still get that flutter of nerves and adrenaline before we run a course but that’s a good thing and we will continue to learn ourselves so our training becomes better and better.

Networking

Joining a networking group is the single best decision we made for our business. It’s brought countless clients our way, amazing contacts who we now outsource to, training, support and friendship.

When we began networking back in 2010 we joined WIBN in Maidenhead and we joined together! It took us back to our A-level English class where we’d sit together, petrified that Mrs Jones would ask us a question about Chaucer! Lisa even had a mood ring that turned black during that lesson!

It wasn’t long before we were brave enough to network separately, spreading our net. After all there were no scary Mrs Jones’ at WIBN, only lovely friendly ladies – many of whom we still network with today.

Flexible working wins!

The whole point of setting up One to Three Marketing was so that we could work flexibly around our families and without a doubt we’ve achieved that. We love that we are able to do the school drop offs, watch sports fixtures and plays and still get to do the job we love. Some days we might not be at our desks much at all, but the world doesn’t stop spinning and we can work that evening.

We now have extra virtual members of our team who do regular work for us and two of them,  Maxine and Millie both have young families and as long as the work gets done we don’t mind if they work at 2 in the afternoon or 2 in the morning! We are huge advocates for flexible working and hope to see more businesses embrace it in the future.

Proving that mixing business and friendship can and does work

There were a few cynics when we joined forces in 2010. Would our friendship crash and burn? Was business worth testing our friendship? Well, to those cynics….look at us now!! We’re not saying it would work for everyone but we are lucky to share a very similar outlook on business and life and it’s fair to say never in these 8 years have we shared a cross word. We totally have each other’s backs, are 100% honest with each other and wouldn’t want to be in partnership with anyone else.

Of course we’ve learned loads more over the years but these things really stand out to us – here’s to the next 8 years!!!
